DESNZ Spotlights UK Fusion Prospectus and Strategy at Latest FIT Meeting as Taskforce Marks Third Anniversary

On 25 November 2025, the Fusion Industry Taskforce (FIT) held its 16th meeting, bringing together affiliates to discuss the UK’s evolving role in the global fusion sector.

The session focused on two upcoming UK government initiatives, the UK Fusion Prospectus and the UK Fusion Strategy, both designed to position the country as a global hub for fusion investment and innovation.

Chair Dr Michael Zdanowski opened the meeting by celebrating FIT’s third anniversary, reflecting on the organisation’s progress, including the publication of four policy papers this year.

Alexander Taylor, Fusion Policy Lead at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ)provided updates on government priorities. He highlighted the ongoing work to explore insurance options for fusion, regulatory considerations beyond the remit of the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce, and preparations for both the Fusion Prospectus and Strategy, expected in March 2026. Taylor emphasised that the Fusion Strategy will signal a shift from research and development to commercialisation, focusing on areas where the UK has world leading expertise and economic value. He also underscored the importance of diversity and skills, inviting FIT affiliates to share case studies on recruitment challenges and visa barriers to tackle the areas that slow fusion progress in the UK.

The meeting also heard perspectives from Gary Reed, Technical Director at Assystem, who reported on a recent gathering of UK fusion stakeholders at St George’s House, Windsor. Discussions there centred on the technologies the UK must prioritise, potential export opportunities, and gaps such as digital engineering. Intellectual property ownership and lessons from past megaprojects were also highlighted, alongside the role of STEP as a lever for sector growth.

Looking ahead, FIT affiliates were encouraged to contribute content and case studies for the Fusion Prospectus by January 2026. The Taskforce hopes the Prospectus will be promoted globally through British Embassies to attract investment and showcase the UK’s fusion sector’s strengths.

With momentum building, FIT continues to play a vital role in shaping the UK’s fusion future, ensuring that industry voices are heard as government strategy takes shape.
